National magazine predicts Newcastle advertising agency to be 'top dog' in social media

In this month’s issue of Marketing Magazine, regular marketing columnist Julian Cole has announced his Top 50 Australian Marketing Pioneers Blogs and Sticky Advertising’s very own bloggers Media Hunter and The Marketer claimed the number 18 and 22 spots, respectively.

Impressive artwork donated to University of Newcastle

An impressive artwork measuring over six metres long has found a new home in the University of Newcastle's Conservatorium.

Skyspace by Australian artist Ms Virginia Cuppaidge has been donated to the University by award-winning children's author, Ms Libby Hathorn.

Dawn Service, Nobbys Beach – 5am for a 5.15am start. This year’s Dawn Service features a new design of the ceremony site in response to the increasing number of people attending this service.

There will be a march from Horseshoe Beach car park to the ceremony site at Nobbys Beach by serving members (INCLUDING contingents from HMAS NEWCASTLE, HMAS TOBRUK, HMAS DIAMANTINA, No 26 Squadron RAAF Williamtown) tri-service cadets and ex- servicemen and women. The service will conclude at approximately 6am with a four-gun Salute to the Fallen by the coastal guns of Fort Scratchley.

Newcastle port expansion not enough - coal co boss

NEW YORK, April 22 (Reuters) - Despite planned expansions, the ability of Australian seaports to handle increased coal shipments is unlikely to improve in the next few years, the head of the world's largest coal producer said on Tuesday.

"It's not going to happen," Gregory Boyce, chairman and chief executive of Peabody Energy Corp (BTU.N: Quote, Profile, Research) told Wall Street analysts.

During a conference call to discuss Peabody's first-quarter financial results, Boyce was asked whether recent congestion at Australian ports would be fixed soon. "It depends on what you mean by 'fixed,'" said Boyce.

Dams levels steady

A small amount of rain over the region's water storages in the past week has seen levels remain constant as local water users prepare to meet to discuss their future.

Lake Glenbawn remained at 48.7 per cent of capacity this week after recording just four millimetres of rain at the dam wall.

Artist Margaret Olley has announced she will purchase three paintings by artist Robert Barnes for the Newcastle Region Art Gallery collection.

On Wednesday night Robert Barnes along with Margaret Olley and Barry Pierce, Head Curator of Australian Art at the Art Gallery of NSW, spoke to a crowded gallery of art enthusiasts.

New campaign to combat worrying Chlamydia increase

Chlamydia is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and it’s on the increase. In the Hunter New England Health region the number of reported cases has more than doubled over the past five years.

In 2007 there were 1,751 reported cases of Chlamydia, while in 2006 there were 1857 cases. This is compared to 402 cases in 1999.
